Augusta Hillside Cemetery: This old town cemetery at Augusta is located on
the hill overlooking the town and Ohio River. The hillside is extremely steep and the
cemetery is rarely used as of this date.
There were several recent burials found.
The survey has been compared with one done by Mr. Shelby Meyer in 1965. Several
stones omitted at that time have been located and several that were found by Meyer are no longer standing or have isappeared altogether. The cemetery is in fairly poor
condition and contains areas where graves have sunken in causing stones to fall over.
Many of the large stones are tilting due to poor condition of their footers. In the
summer, grass and weeds generally take over and many stones are hard to find. One of the best areas of the cemetery is actually on top where it is easier to mow and
maintain the ground. There is a large mausoleum on top of the hill contain the Mackie family. Another of the large stones is for Dr. Joshua Bradford and wife. Many of
Augusta's famous citizens are buried here, the Taylor families, Doniphans, Bradfords,
Marshall, just to name a few.

The cemetery is easy to find, it is on the south side ofroute 8 in Augusta and is accessed by a road that leads to the top of the hill.
